What to feed a dog?

Every owner has the responsibility to try to provide the best possible nutrition to it´s pet dog.
Unfortunately it is very often noted by us vets that the generalized ignorance leads to common mistakes.
Although it is possible to provide an adequate nutrition based on home cooked meals, the normal human meal composition is far from satisfactory from a dog´s point of view.
It all starts from the metabolic needs of the canine organism. Their carnivores not omnivores such difference makes their gastro-intestinal tract significantly smaller than ours and very specialized in digesting proteins and its derivates.
From this point of departure we can very easily come to the conclusion that if you want to provide a home cooked meal for your dog that meets is metabolic needs you´ll have to cook a meal specifically for your dog, because your´s just won´t do...
It is general consent in nowadays that commercially available food (specially dry food) is the paramount in wich a dog´s nutrition should be based for several reasons:
It´s practical and meets the animal´s nutritional needs
Easily affordable in any commercial store
Dry food in particular is very hygienic and makes pot cleaning easier
In case os illness there´s already special foods available making treatment a lot easier (diabetes, renal desease, etc)
